Google Business Profile Optimization: A Practical Guide

A Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Google Maps and in the local results next to search. For businesses with a location or a service area, it is often the first thing a customer sees. Creating it takes minutes; keeping it useful takes a little time every month.

1. Create or claim the profile

Go to Google Business Profile and search for your business name. If a listing already exists, request ownership. If not, create one with your exact business name as it appears on your signage and website. Do not add keywords or city names to the name; that breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.

2. Verify the business

Google offers verification by video, phone, email or postcard depending on the business and country. Video verification usually asks you to show the location, signage and proof of management such as tools or business documents in one continuous recording. Until verification is complete, edits may not appear publicly.

3. Choose categories carefully

The primary category has the biggest effect on which searches show your profile. Choose the most specific one that describes your main business. Add secondary categories only for services you really offer.

4. Address or service area

If customers visit you, show your address. If you visit customers, such as a plumber or a mobile service, hide the address and set a service area instead. Use the same address format everywhere: on the profile, your website footer and directories.

5. Complete every section

  • Hours, including special hours for holidays.
  • Phone and website, pointing to a relevant page rather than always to the home page.
  • Services or products, each with a short description.
  • Business description in plain language: what you do, for whom and where.
  • Attributes such as accessibility or payment options that apply.

6. Photos

Upload real photos of the storefront, interior, team and work. Add new ones regularly. Avoid stock images; customers and Google both value authentic photos of the business.

7. Reviews

Ask satisfied customers for a review with the direct link from your profile. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones; it breaks Google's policies and review platforms remove them.

8. Posts and updates

Posts show offers, events and news on your profile. They are a simple way to show the listing is active. Keep them short, add a photo and a link.

9. Connect it to your website

  • Use the same business name, address and phone number on your website as on the profile.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data to your website with the same details.
  • Create a page for each service or location you list on the profile, and link the profile to the matching page.
  • Embed a map on your contact page.

10. Check the performance report

The profile shows how many people found you, which searches they used and whether they called, asked for directions or visited the website. Use it to see which services and photos get attention and update the profile accordingly.

Monthly routine

  1. Reply to new reviews.
  2. Upload a few new photos.
  3. Publish one post.
  4. Check hours and special hours.
  5. Review the performance report.

A complete profile works best with a fast, well-structured website behind it. See our web development services or read the technical SEO guide.
