Technical SEO Guide: The Foundations Every Website Needs

Technical SEO is the part of search optimisation that happens in code and server settings. It does not replace good content, but it decides whether search engines can find, understand and trust that content. These are the foundations we set up on every site.

1. Crawling: let search engines in

  • robots.txt at the site root tells crawlers what not to fetch. Block admin areas and internal search results; never block CSS or JavaScript that pages need to render.
  • Internal links are how crawlers discover pages. Every important page should be reachable through normal links, not only through a search box or a script.
  • Status codes matter: 200 for live pages, 301 for permanent moves, 404 or 410 for removed pages.

2. Indexing: one URL per page

The same page often exists at several addresses: with and without www, with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters. Choose one version and redirect the others with 301s. On every page, add a rel=canonical tag pointing to that version. A missing or wrong canonical is one of the most common reasons the wrong URL shows up in search.

Use noindex for pages that should exist but not appear in search, such as checkout steps or thank-you pages.

3. Sitemaps

An XML sitemap lists the URLs you want indexed. Include only canonical, indexable pages that return 200. Large or multilingual sites can use a sitemap index that points to one sitemap per section or language. Reference the sitemap in robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

4. Titles, descriptions and headings

  • A unique title per page, roughly 50–60 characters, with the main topic first.
  • A meta description that summarises the page in one or two sentences.
  • One H1 per page that matches what the title promises, and H2s that structure the content.

5. Structured data

Schema.org markup in JSON-LD tells search engines what a page represents: an Organization, a Product, an Article, a FAQ or a breadcrumb trail. It does not guarantee rich results, but it removes ambiguity. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.

6. Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-user experience with three metrics:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content appears. Serve compressed images in modern formats, preload the hero image and font, and avoid render-blocking scripts.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks. Keep JavaScript small and split long tasks.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout jumps while loading. Set width and height on images and reserve space for embeds.

Check them in PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console.

7. Mobile-first

Google indexes the mobile version of your site. Content, links and structured data must be the same on mobile as on desktop, and the layout must work at small widths without horizontal scrolling.

8. HTTPS and security headers

Serve every page over HTTPS and redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Mixed content, such as images loaded over HTTP, breaks the padlock and can block resources.

9. Multilingual sites and hreflang

If you publish the same page in several languages, give each language its own URL and connect them with hreflang tags. Every version lists all the others and itself, and an x-default entry points to the fallback version. Do not redirect visitors automatically by browser language; show a language switcher with normal links instead, so both users and crawlers can reach every version.

10. Faster discovery with IndexNow

IndexNow lets you notify Bing, Yandex and other participating search engines when URLs are added or changed. It is a simple POST request with your URLs and a key file hosted on your domain.

Launch checklist

  1. One canonical domain, other variants redirect with 301.
  2. Every page has a unique title, description, canonical and one H1.
  3. robots.txt allows crawling and lists the sitemap.
  4. Sitemap contains only indexable 200 URLs.
  5. Structured data validates without errors.
  6. Core Web Vitals pass on mobile.
  7. hreflang is reciprocal on multilingual pages.
  8. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are verified.

We work through this checklist on every site we build. See our web development services or email info@safindra.com for a technical review of your current site.
